LPM Tip - How to Handle Subprojects
Question: I'm working with a very large project that contains several smaller sections, each section then having its own steps. Is there an expected way to organize something like this? For example, an Anniversary celebration will have a website, guest speakers, a book, etc. Each of these subprojects has its own action steps. What is the best way to break this up?

Answer: In the interest of software simplicity, we have provided only one level for “project” in LPM. There are many ways to handle subprojects; here are two suggestions:

1) An excellent way to handle a project like the one you describe is to use the Dept filter to list the larger project name: “Centennial Celebration - 100 Years of University Excellence”. Then list pieces of the larger project such as: website, speakers, and book, as project types. This gives you the ability to list all of the subprojects required for each of the project types as individual projects.

2) Another method is to list the larger project as a Project Type and to use the titles of subprojects to describe the subprojects. For example, the Project Type might be “Anniversary Celebration - 100 Years of University Excellence”. Subprojects could be titled “Website – generate concepts”, “Website – select and detail design”, “Speakers – contact speakers”, “Speakers – schedule speakers”, etc. In this instance, you can click on the header of the “Name” field on the project list screen and your projects will be organized in alphabetical order with subprojects grouped by the first word in the name.
